SCHUELER: Some might say, we've needed the rain over the last couple days, but the midday and evening showers have created nesting grounds for mosquitoes.

[:08]

While there have been no reported cases of West Nile in Madison county this year, sample tests taken from birds, have turned out positive in St. Clair county, Washington county, and St. Charles county.  This illustration shows the spread of the West Nile virus from June 5th through July 10th.

There were 60 human cases of West Nile in Illinois last year.  While there have not been any reported human cases this year,…

…residents are advised to take the necessary precautions, to avoid mosquitoes from breeding in their backyards and around the neighborhood.

 [:45]

Mosquitoes nest in still water locations around the neighborhood, like bird bathes and small backyard ponds.  Residents are advised to empty anything retaining water every 3 to 5 days

SCHUELER: Large bodies of water, like cougar lake, can be swarmed with mosquitoes, and should only be approached when properly defended with bug repellant.

[1:14]

RIEBELING: There are many simple steps one can take to avoid mosquitoes.  For example lighting citronella candles like these or by using bug repellents such as these containing deet.  Reporting for Mark Schueler, I’m Kyle Riebeling.
